Allied Emergency Services: Certified Weather Spotter with NWS Chicago
At Allied Emergency Services, we take pride in our commitment to the safety and preparedness of our community. As a certified weather spotter with the National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago, we play a crucial role in providing timely and accurate reports on severe weather conditions. This partnership enhances our ability to respond effectively to storm damage and support our clients in Illinois and the greater Chicago area.
What Does It Mean to Be a Certified Weather Spotter?
Being a certified weather spotter means we are trained to observe and report various severe weather phenomena. Our training includes recognizing and accurately reporting:
- Hail: We measure hail to the nearest 1/4 inch or compare it to common objects like a quarter or golf ball. Hail with a diameter of 1 inch (the size of a quarter) or larger is considered severe and must be reported.
- Wind or Wind Damage: Winds of at least 58 mph (measured) or any wind damage, such as large tree limbs down, power poles down, structural damage, or overturned vehicles, are critical to report. Lesser damages, such as small limbs or dead trees, may not require immediate reporting but are still monitored.
- Tornado or Funnel Cloud: Careful observation is necessary to confirm rotation, ground contact, and associated debris before reporting a tornado or funnel cloud.
- Lightning: Significant damage caused by lightning, such as house fires, injuries, or fatalities, must be reported. Frequent or unusually colored lightning without damage does not need to be reported.
- Flash Flooding: Reports are necessary for at least 6 inches of flowing water over roads or 3 feet of standing water, major road closures, bridge closures, or rescue operations due to flooding. We also report significant rainfall amounts (at least 2 inches in an hour or less) if we have access to rain gauges.
How Does This Benefit Our Clients?
Our role as a weather spotter directly benefits our clients by enhancing our readiness and response capabilities. By staying ahead of severe weather events, we can:
- Provide Faster Emergency Response: Immediate reporting allows us to mobilize our teams quickly to address storm damage, ensuring timely restoration services.
- Ensure Safety and Preparedness: Accurate weather reports help us advise our clients on necessary precautions and actions to take before, during, and after a storm.
- Improve Community Awareness: Our reports contribute to the broader network of weather spotters, helping the NWS provide better forecasts and warnings to the public.
